Chelsea boss Antonio Conte throws Diego Costa’s future into doubt after Real Madrid loss

ANTONIO CONTE has admitted he doesn’t know if Diego Costa will remain a Chelsea player.

EXIT: Diego Costa
Costa has been closely linked with a return to Atletico Madrid this summer.
But he looked ready to stay put with Conte unsure whether he had enough firepower in reserve to let the 27-year-old seek a move away from west London.
However the new Blues boss has plunged Costa’s future back into doubt by refusing to confirm whether the Brazil-born Spain international will still be at Stamford Bridge next season.
Speaking after Chelsea’s 3-2 pre-season loss to Real Madrid, which Costa missed with a back problem, Conte said: “I can say today that Costa is a Chelsea player.
"He didn’t play in this game because of injury and if he solves this injury and I see him in training and he is in good shape, then it can be possible to see him in our next game against Milan.
"I speak for today and today Costa is a Chelsea player. Tomorrow, if you ask me if Costa will remain with us, I don’t know.”
His comments come as Romelu Lukaku reportedly closes in on a return to Chelsea.
The Blues are apparently confident they can re-sign the striker with an offer of around £60m, despite Everton’s mammoth £75m valuation of the 23-year-old.
"I don’t want to speak about players of other teams,” said Conte when questioned on Lukaku.

Champions League will stop Leicester challenging for title - Niall Quinn

NIALL QUINN fears Leicester’s Champions League dream could end up making their Premier League defence a nightmare.

NOT AGAIN: Quinn says Leicester won't be able to repeat their title triumph
Worried about the negative impact a dual charge on home and European fronts will bring to the Foxes – former Manchester City striker Quinn tips his old club to reclaim their crown.
And he is also ‘blaming’ Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester for the increased summer of spending madness.
Quinn, who will again be co-commentating for Sky Sports this season, said: “Earlier this summer a friend said to me, ‘The Premier League cleansed itself last season’.
"And while it was very profound statement, he had a point in the sense that the game had gone money mad.
"Then Leicester came along to show that in spite of a lot of money being spent elsewhere, that a team that had heart, courage, commitment, spirit and a game-plan that everyone sticks to, can allow you to upset the odds.
"And that is what made the story so refreshing and everyone feel great about it.
"It was the best year to be involved in the Premier League since I was there on day one as a player – because it was the story that should NEVER have happened. And when it did, the other so-called bigger clubs said, ‘Let’s make sure it does not happen again’.
"Those clubs at the top have since gone crazy. We are now paying £120million for players and are giving agents £20m.
"Last year, with Leicester, we got a glimpse of what money can’t buy.
"Now we are going to see what money CAN buy. And that is the thing I fear for Leicester. The fact they have to play in the Champions League as well means they will find it hard to get close to where they got to last season.”
Instead, Quinn is tipping Pep Guardiola’s City to pip Man United’s Jose Mourinho to the title.
He said: “I think City have an edge – they are starting from a stronger base than United. The big story this season will be in Manchester.”

RUMOURS: Chelsea have £57m bid rejected for Lukaku

The Blues remain confident of securing a deal for the Everton striker, even though the club are holding out for £75 million
Chelsea have had a £57 million bid rejected by Everton for Romelu Lukaku, according to the Mirror.

The report claims that the Toffees are demanding £75m for the Belgium international but Chelsea are confident that they can secure a deal for less.

Everton have accepted that the striker wants to leave Goodison Park this summer in order to rejoin his former club.

Chelsea sold the 23-year-old to Everton for £28m in 2014.

Inter vs Bayern Munich: Nerazzurri fend off Icardi speculation ahead of ICC clash

The Italian and German giants lock horns at Charlotte's Bank of America Stadium on Saturday, but a prospective move to Napoli is dominating the agenda around the club captain

Inter face a tough test in the shape of Bayern Munich in their latest International Champions Cup clash, but the biggest concerns at the Italian giants revolve around the future of Mauro Icardi.
The ex-Barcelona and Sampdoria striker has been heavily tipped to succeed Gonzalo Higuain at Inter's Serie A rivals Napoli.
The club have more than €90 million in new funds following that sale, but the Nerazzurri will not let their captain go without a fight.
"All of us are hoping that number goes over €60m," president Erick Thohir warned in New York when asked about a reported new bid from Napoli.
"But for us, that isn't important at the moment.
"Inter will be here for hundreds of years yet. Inter is made of individuals who can change. This happens every year.
"Icardi is a very important player for the team, he's our captain. We're building a team and we have to look at the dynamic."
The Argentine missed both of Inter's games in the past week, as a 3-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain was followed a draw against Estudiantes in New York.
Coach Roberto Mancini, however, has insisted that injury kept Icardi out of action.
"I didn't field him because he reported feeling some pain in his shoulder this morning. There would have been no point in risking him," he said, while refusing to confirm whether Icardi would participate in Saturday's Bayern clash.
The Bundesliga champions, meanwhile, are looking to end the International Champions Cup on a high after enduring a defeat on penalties at the hands of AC Milan.
"We have to continue our work. We have time to prepare the team before we start the official competition," coach Carlo Ancelotti said at a news conference after the game.
"We can use this game to improve our conditioning, to improve our organization. We’re at the beginning, so we made some mistakes but of course we have to wait for all the players when they come back and after that we can prepare our season."
Players like Robert Lewandowski, Manuel Neuer, Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng and Renato Sanches are resting after playing in Euro 2016, and while midfielder Arturo Vidal is in the United States, he did not feature against Milan.
Partly because of the absences, the new Bayern boss is more concerned with how his players are progressing physically than if the team lifts pre-season trophies.
"At this moment, I think the most important thing is the physical condition," he said. "We don’t have all the players, but we try to do our style, our play, so the goal is to improve our physical condition.
"In this sense, we are doing well. We didn’t have injuries tonight and we can continue to work, to prepare the next two games here and this is good."

Wayne Rooney says Jose Mourinho has been 'fantastic' on Manchester United training ground

Rooney has been impressed with Jose Mourinho

Wayne Rooney says Jose Mourinho has been "fantastic" at getting his message across as Manchester United prepare for the new season.
The England striker admits their plans have been disrupted by a cancelled friendly against Manchester City in China and the advent of international tours in general, but insists training has been "really good".

Rooney, for whom a testimonial against Everton will be held in his honour next week, also believes new signings Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly have improved the aquad, with Paul Pogba expected to follow shortly.

Rooney, who returned to training on Thursday after his post-Euro 2016 break, told Sky Sports News HQ: "Jose's been fantastic.

"Training's been really good and preparation has been going well, you can see why he's been successful with the way he works and how he gets his message across.

"We just want to get to the games now. We've got one in Sweden ( against Galatasaray ) that I'm forward to. As always, as a footballer, it's exciting to play under a new manager and you're always getting those butterflies to get the new season started.
Rooney trained for the first time with Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Thursday

"The squad looks good too. The signings we've brought in are really good and they'll help us to try and win the Premier League . they've got quality and experience, which is needed, so it's an exciting time to be a United fan.
"When you have a tournament in summer, the preparation is a bit disrupted for the managers, in a way. Some players come back earyly, some a few weeks later.

"The testimonial is an extra game for the manager to pick which players he wants and a few might benefit from the game, and I'm sure it's the same for Everton. I'm really looking forward to it."
Rooney did not feature in United's defeat to Borussia Dortmund

Rooney's testimonial will not only honour his 12 years of service and 519 appearances but also raise funds for four charities through the Wayne Rooney Foundation.
Speaking form Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool, where he has been visiting children, he said: "Winning trophies are the biggest highlights as a player. My 12 years at United has gone quick and I've enjoyed it.

"There's been highs and lows. Hopefully there'll be a few more highs to come soon in the near future, and I'm grateful to United for giving me the chance to play for them for so many years, and be successful with them, it's what we all want and want to do again soon."

Chelsea striker Diego Costa struggling with back injury as new season approaches

Diego Costa is not expected to feature against Real Madrid on Saturday
Chelsea striker Diego Costa is struggling with a back injury and will not play against Real Madrid on Saturday, head coach Antonio Conte has confirmed.
The Spain international took no part in the Blues' 1-0 win over Liverpool in the International Champions Cup in Los Angeles on Wednesday, with the new Premier League season now just two weeks away.
And Conte, speaking in a press conference ahead of their next friendly in Michigan, insisted he will never pick a player who has not trained, no matter what their status in the club.
"I have to see the players in training. If I cannot see them in the training session, I cannot put them in a game," he said.
"I want to see my players in training, doing the work. If someone is injured or there is some problems and I don't see the player, then it's impossible for me to think about putting him in the starting eleven or on the bench.
"This is normal, for me. In the last few days, Diego had pain in his back. So he didn't train, and for this reason he didn't play."
Michy Batshuayi is expected to feature in Diego Costa's place
Conte said he will start with Asmir Begovic in goal but Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard, who recently returned to training after their post-Euro 2016 breaks, will both begin the second half.
And he expects some tiredness in his players' legs, stating it is "not easy" to play just two days after their win over 10-man Liverpool.
"The game against Liverpool was a physical game that both teams fought to win," he said. "We had only one training session to prepare, but we have to work in pre-season.
"I hope to use our minds tomorrow. When you are tired, it's important to use the head, stay concentrated and play good football, despite being tired."

Higuain's Juventus move not about money - agent

Gonzalo Higuian's brother and agent Nicolas says his move from Napoli to Juventus was motivated by the project the money.

Nocolas Higuain says his brother Gonzalo's move from Napoli to fierce Serie A rivals Juventus was not motivated by money, claiming higher wages were offered by his former club.

Nicolas took offence to a letter published by Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, who criticised Gonzalo's move to Juventus.

He said that if money had been his brother's highest priority, he would have stayed at Napoli.

"I heard that he spoke of our meetings for the renewal of Gonzalo's contract, "Nicolas told Tuttosport.

"The only thing I can say is that we never reached an agreement because the issue was not [about money]. but the project, and I said so many times.

"De Laurentiis has proposed a major contract with higher figures than those of Juve, but the problem was not the money."

Nicolas also said that Gonzalo's move to Juventus was not fuelled by a desire to betray Napoli, but rather was his only option as the Italian champions were the only team willing to meet the £90million release clause in his contract.

"The only team that has come forward is Juve, there were no other clubs willing to pay the £90m clause," he continued.

"Only the Bianconeri were ready to do so and no other member of the big European  clubs have contacted me in recent months. The rest are lies."

RUMOURS: Arsenal in talks to sign Valencia defender Mustafi

The Germany international has a £42.1 million release clause but the Gunners could secure a cheaper deal as they look to fill the void left by the injured Per Mertesacker
Arsenal have opened talks with Valencia over a more for Shkodran Mustafi, according to Sky Germany.

The 24-year-old centre-back has a £42.1 million release clause but the Gunners could potentially do a deal for £25.3m plus another £8.4m in add-ons.

Mustafi spent three at Everton after joining from Hamburg in 2009 but failed to make a Premier League appearance under David Moyes before joining Samdoria on a free transfer.

Wenger remains in the market for a central defender after Per Mertesacker was ruled out for the start of the season due to a knee injury.

RUMOURS: Borussia Monchengladbach launch €18m bid for Chelsea defender Christensen

The 20-year-old impressed during his loan spell in the Bundesliga, and now the club are ready to secure a record deal for the centre-back

Borussia Monchengladbach have launched an €18 million bid for Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen, according to Bild.
The report claims that the Premier League club are holding out for €22m but a deal for €20m including a buy-back clause is a likely compromise.
Christensen, 20, initially joined Chelsea from Brondby in 2014 but made just three senior appearances for the club before he was sent out on loan to Gladbach last season.
And because of his impressive performances in the Bundesliga last term, Andre Schubert's side are ready to make the Denmark international a club-record signing

Pep Guardiola confirms John Stones interest

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola yesterday confirmed his interest in signing Everton defender John Stones.
The England defender has been linked with the club for several months now and City are keen to push through a deal for the 22-year-old.

Everton are holding out for upwards of £5om (£59m) fot the England international and that remains a sticking point, although Guardiola remains keen to add Stones and Schalke forward Leroy Sane.

"Sane is a player from Schalke. If he comes, we''ll be happy. If he stays, I'll be happy for the Schalke fans," said the Catalan.

In relation to Stones, Guardiola told his post-match press conference: "It's the same answer for Sane-he's a player for Everton.

"Everyone knows we're going to try but we will see."

Stones flew out to Germany yesterday for a two-match tournament in Dresden.

The defender played 30 minutes of Tuesday's win at MK Dons , his first appearance since returning from extended  leave after Euro 2016.

Guardiola was speaking after his side's penalty shoot-out win over Borussia Dortmund, where Sergio Aguero's second-half goal was cancelled out by Christian Pulisic at the International Champions Cup in China.

Goalkeeper Angus Gunn became City's hero as he saved three penalties in a shoot-out. The 20 year-old son of former Norwich goalkeeper Bryan Gunn, came on as one of eight changes at half-time.

Paul Pogba arrives in Los Angeles to undergo Man Utd medical - reports

PAUL POGBA has touched down in Los Angeles ahead of his Manchester United medical, according to reports.
The Juventus midfielder is edging closer to finalising his return to Old Trafford for a world record transfer fee.

And according to France Football and L'Equipe journalist Nabil Djellit, things are moving quickly.

He tweeted yesterday evening: "Paul #Pogba is ideal to pass a medical examination for #ManUtd, in the direction of #LosAngeles...? # Mercato."

Before confirming he had landed, saying: "#Pogba has just landed in #LosAngeles...it is 13:36 local time...#Mercato#Manutd."

Pogba has previously been in Miami on holiday recovering from his Euro 2016 exploits with France.

Reports suggested earlier this week that the 23-year-old had a medical booked in, but his agent cancelled it.

Mino Raiola was unhappy with both clubs  disagreeing on a £20m fee he is set to pocket for brokering the deal and as a result he put the deal on hold.

But the dispute looks to have been resolved with the Daily Star claiming a deal has finally been agreed.

United are set to pay an initial £112m fee with the total cost rising to £178m with his wages included.

The report claims Pogba has put pen to paper on a five-year deal and will take home £275,000 a week, adding another £66m to the cost of the deal.

Guardiola confident of capturing £50m Stones as Man City and Everton eye compromise

Pep Guardiola wants to bolster his defence ahead of the new Prmier League season at Manchester City

PEP GUARDIOLA remain confident of landing John Stones despite Manchester City's refusal to meet Everton's £50million-plus valuation of the England defender.

City are understood to have had a £40m bid rejected earlier this month but the clubs hace reopened negotiations and are trying to thrash out a compromise.

Striker Wilfried Bony could be offered as the makeweight in a cash-plus-player transfer but Everton are understood to prefer an all-money deal.

Another option is to work out a sizeable down payment with add-ons along the lines of the deal City agreed with Liverpool last summer for Raheem Sterling, who moved for £44m plus £5m in add-ons based on  the team's success and the player's progress.

As City prepared for their International Champions Cup game against Borussia Dortmund here on Friday night, Guardiola said : "At the end of the transfer window we will have to see which players we have. I think by August 31 we will have the right players to play the way we want.''

He has targeted Stones, 22, as a replacement for injury-prone Vincent Kompany, who will miss the start of the season with a groin problem.

Guardiola is also interested in Leonardo Bonucci but club sources say he will only move for the Juventus and Italy centre-half if a deal for Stones doesn't materalise.

And there are two huge obstacles in concluding any deal, Juve's asking price is £50m, double what City want to pay for the 29th-year-old, and Bonucci says he is happy to stay in Turin.

Significantly, however, Juve have signed Mehdi Benatia on loan from Bayern Munich as a potential replacement in case they lose Bonucci.

City are cautiously happy with Kompany's progress and hope he will be back sooner rather than later. Guardiola will not rush him but given Kompany's injury record over ther past two seasons he needs to buy a top-class defender in case his captain breaks down again.

He already has three-centre backs in Nicolas Otamendi, Eliaquim Mangala and Belgium youngster Jason Denayer, who spent last season gaining valuable experience on loan at Galatasaray.

If City land Stones or Bonucci, and Kompany regains fitness, then France international Mangala, who returns to training this weekend after his post-Euros break, could be loanded or sold with Valencia showing interest in taking him to La Liga.

Denayer, who was in Belgium's Euro 2016 squad, could also be kept because he can provide right-back cover for Bacary Sagna because long-serving Pablo Zabeleta remains a target for Inter Milan.

Guardiola has also raised the prospect of turning Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho into City's version of Barcelona's Javier Mascherano.

He successfully switched former Liverpool midfielder Mascherano into a back-four player with great success at the Nou Camp. He also played Yaya Toure there in the 2009 Champions League final against Manchester United and used Spain midfielder Javi Martinez in defence at Bayern Munich.

And he believes Fernandinho, or his fellow Brazilian Fernando, can do the same job.

" Fernandinho can play in 10 different positions, because he has the quality to play wherever. He can play there [defence ] because he quick, aggressive, intelligent and strong in the air. He has the quality to create good build-up play and can play a forward pass.

" Fernandinho can also play there, but maybe he is not as quick as Fernandinho. A lot of the midfield players we have here can play at the back, and when that happens the build-up play is much, much better.

"We need to create good build-up play, with easy passes in midfield, to achieve good passes for our strikers further up the pitch.

"When the ball goes straight from a central defender to a striker, the ball usually comes back as quickly as it goes. We have to make it clear [ to the players] that we are building up in our first process, whether that is defenders or midfielders, and that is why we need players of quality, to play in that style, and we have the players to do that. "

"I am not in the dressing room," he said. "I don't know the players well enough yet- it is their choice. It is not a problem because we have a lot of experienced palyers.''

Toure has been Kompany's deputy in the past while Joe Hart has also skippered City.

Real Madrid set to launch £30m bid for Sissoko

The Spanish club are set to miss out on Paul Pogba but will now table an offer for one of France's stars at Euro 2016 to strengthen their midfield
Real Madrid are set to launch a bid for Newcastle United midfielder Moussa Sissoko, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Zinedine Zidane's side are confident that a £30 million offer will be enough to land the 26-year-old, who impressed for France at Euro 2016 earlier this summer.

Newcastle were also in the running for Pogba but the report claims that they do not have the financial power to compete with United for the Juventus midfielder.

Before Euro 2016, West Brom had enquired about a potential deal for Sissoko, while Borussia Dortmud Juventus and Everton have registered their interest after the tournament.

Higuain: The objective is to win the Champions League

Juventus hoping striker can fire them to glory after big money transfer
Having won five Serie A titles in a row, the goal for Juventus this season is clear and if spending 90 million euros on Gonzalo Higuain was not a big enough statement of intent, the Argentinean striker was quick that he shares the objective.

Arriving in Turin after completing an Italian record transfer from rivals Napoli, the 28-year-old immediately showed he is aware of what is expected of him and the team this season.

"The goal is to win the Champion League, but for now I want to be calm in order to arrive in the best shape for the first fixture,"said Higuain.

Juventus were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League, and by adding a centre-forward as prolific as Higuain, the hope is that he can propel them to further glory.

Higuain may well be something of a hate figure in Naples after completing the controversial transfer but after scoring 36 league goals last season, he was given a hero's welcome by the bianconeri fans, and reciprocated that warmth.

The Argentina international described the move as'a new adventure and a beautiful feeling, 'before adding that Juventus has a 'great team'.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan hails Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Manchester United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has described Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic as an 'amazing player'.
Both Mkhitaryan and Ibrahimovic joined the ranks at Old Trafford earlier this summer, but the latter is yet to make his debut for the club.
In fact, Ibrahimovic, 34, has just touched down in Manchester and is set to join his new teammates for pre-season training imminently.
Mkhitaryan, meanwhile, featured at the DW Stadium during United's first pre-season outing against Wigan, while he found the back of the net against Borussia Dortmund during the club's tour of China.
And it's fair to say that the versatile midfielder is excited by the prospect of lining up alongside Ibrahimovic.
MKHITARYAN SPEAKS OUT
"He's an amazing player, the name says everything," he said, as per the Telegraph. "I think it will be easy to play with him because he is a high-quality player. He won't make only my life easier but the team's life."
The Armenia international has insisted that he will do all he can to reach the next level but can't promise anything at this stage.
The midfielder has also admitted that United's former player, Shinji Kagawa, told him good things about the club.
"I never promise something, I always say that I will try," Mkhitaryan said. "Because if you promise something and you don't do it you will always be under pressure. I want to do everything to get to a new level.
"Every time Shinji talked about Manchester he told me something good so it gives a good impression. You have to try and do everything to show your best qualities otherwise you will not be here anymore."
ZLATAN DEBUT
United fans, then, will be hoping to see Mkhitaryan and Ibrahimovic join forces for the club's fixture against Turkish outfit Galatasaray on Saturday.
In fact, with the two sides set to meet in Sweden, there's every chance that United fans will get to see Ibrahimovic in action.
The arrival of the enigmatic striker doesn't necessarily guarantee success for the Red Devils, but their fans should be confident that the club can once again make an impact on the Premier League title race.
