Man United legend: Why Wayne Rooney and Paul Pogba will relish playing together

WAYNE ROONEY and Paul Pogba can forge an effective partnership for Manchester United, according to Gary Neviille.

The Red Devils hero believes the arrival of the Frenchman a shouldn't be a problem for the England captain as they will play in different roles.

Pogba didn't play in United's Premier Leauge opener against Bournemouth due to a suspension being carried over from his time at Juventus.

Jose Mourinho's side saw off the Cherries 3-1 with Juan Mata, Rooney  and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all on on the scoresheet.

"It wouldn't even surprise me if Pogba and Rooney play in front of a holding midfield player, "Neville told Sky Sports.

"I think them two can play well together, he's got enough intelligence and he can arrive in the box."

And Neville believes it is time for Rooney to settle in a role for United after a few seasons of uncertainty under different managers at Old Trafford.

"If you think about where he was playing under Louis Van Gaal 18 months ago, he was playing as a single striker getting 25 touches a match, "he added.

"Last season he was getting 100-odd touches on the left of three in midfield. Now he's got Jose Mourinho come in and say you're not going to play there, you're going to play as a No 10.

"I think what he probably needs is stability  and a manager to stay with him for two or three years. He now needs to settle in to that latter-phase-of-his-career position."

United's next match sees Mourinho take to Old Trafford for his first Premier League match as boss when Southampton visit on Friday evening.
