Netherlands national team head coach Danny Blind has confirmed that his assistant, Dick Advocaat, has handed in his resignation ahead of taking up the reins at Turkish giants Fenerbahce.
The 68-year-old joined the Netherlands coaching setup three months ago, after parting ways with Sunderland at the start of the 2015/16 Premier League campaign.
Having steered the Black Cats to safety on the last day of the 2014/15 campaign, Advocaat remained at the club's helm for just under two months before announcing his resignation.
Advocaat's impending move to Fenerbahce has not gone down well with Blind, who found it hard to hide his disappointment.
"I am surprised and disappointed. When I approached Dick in the spring, he gave me the impression that he was in it for the long haul, "he told reporters.
"Anyway, it does not make sense to give it too much thought. From now on we have to apply ourselves only the matches against Greece and Sweden. There is work to do."
Advocaat responded to the news of his departure on Dutch radio station NOS with the following statement: "I am keen to work at such a big club in Turkey. At my age it is a fantastic challenge."
